The South Texas College of Law Houston community gathered on Saturday, October 11, at 713 Music Hall for the annual South Texas Law Gala — an elegant and energetic evening that raised an impressive $400,000 for student scholarships.
The event’s theme, “The Spirit of South Texas Law,” came to life as alumni, faculty, and friends filled the venue, celebrating the connections that define the law school’s community. Acrobatic performers added excitement throughout the night, from stilt walkers and jugglers during the reception to a stunning aerialist act that brought the program to a dramatic close. More than 300 guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner catered by A Fare Extraordinaire and ended the evening dancing to the sounds of The Mockingbirds Band.
Thanks to many generous sponsors, the evening began with more than $325,000 in gifts designated for student scholarships. The momentum continued with an additional $75,000 raised through a live auction and Paddles Up appeal.
Reynaldo “Rey” Anaya Valencia, the law school’s new President and Dean, addressed the crowd before the auction, sharing his personal background and excitement about joining the South Texas Law community. He encouraged guests to give generously in support of students.
“Every dollar pledged tonight represents opportunity,” Dean Valencia said. “It’s an investment in our students and the communities they will go on to serve.”
The evening’s success was made possible by the bold leadership and vision of Gala co-chairs Brenda and Nick Lanza ’89 and Isis Mercado and Alex Gonzalez ’12, whose enthusiasm and dedication inspired impressive support from sponsors and attendees and helped create a truly memorable event.
“We are deeply grateful to each and every one of our sponsors and supporters,” Lanza said.
“I was truly inspired by the generosity of our South Texas Law community,” added Gonzalez.
Funds raised through the Gala will directly support student scholarships, easing financial burdens and allowing talented, hardworking students to focus on their studies, advocacy training, and professional development.
The 2025 South Texas Law Gala captured the heart of what makes the law school special, showcasing its people, its purpose, and its spirit of generosity. The night was a vibrant reminder that when our community comes together, great things happen — for students, for the future of law, and for Houston and beyond.
