The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at South Texas College of Law Houston is once again offering low-and-moderate-income individuals free assistance in preparing and electronically submitting their tax returns.
Participants will be assisted by licensed attorneys supervising law students who are certified to prepare tax returns. Recently, 25 students volunteered to receive this special training so they could assist with the annual VITA program.
The first session is scheduled Friday, Jan. 30, from 2-7 p.m. in South Texas Law’s Randall O. Sorrels Legal Clinics, located downtown at 1303 San Jacinto St. in Houston. This assistance is open to the public, including students and staff from the law school.

While no appointment is needed and walk-ins are welcome, individuals may call 713-646-1761 or email vita@stcl.edu for more information. To find out more details, including what documents to bring, click here.
Generally to qualify, individuals must make $67,000 or less and/or may be persons with disabilities or limited English-speaking taxpayers. Spanish-language assistance is available.
VITA sessions will occur every Friday from Jan. 30 to April 11 (except March 13) on campus at 1303 San Jacinto St. In addition, sessions are planned at the Star of Hope shelter and the Jones Public Library in Dayton, which is in Liberty County.
Professor or Law Bruce A. McGovern directs the law school’s Tax Clinic, Jeff Gold is assistant director and an adjunct professor for the Tax Clinic, and Heidi Weelborg is teaching this semester’s VITA Clinic course.
