Professor of Law Josh Blackman, the Centennial Chair of Constitutional Law Education at South Texas College of Law Houston, was appointed Friday by President Donald Trump as one of six members of the Religious Liberty Commission’s advisory board of legal experts.
Blackman has served as a professor at South Texas Law since 2012. His legal specialties are constitutional law and the United States Supreme Court. He was quoted during two presidential impeachment trials, has testified before Congress, and advises federal and state lawmakers. He regularly appears on TV, including NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the BBC.
He is a frequent guest on NPR and other syndicated radio programs. He has published commentaries in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and leading national publications. He has authored three books including An Introduction to Constitutional Law, which was a top-five bestseller on Amazon.
Blackman has written more than five dozen law review articles that have been cited nearly a thousand times. He was selected by Forbes Magazine for the “30 Under 30” in Law and Policy. He also is the president of the Harlan Institute.
President Trump created the Religious Liberty Commission May 1 through an executive order. According to the White House website, the commission is tasked with producing a comprehensive report on the foundations of religious liberty in America, strategies to increase awareness of and celebrate America’s peaceful religious pluralism, current threats to religious liberty, and strategies to preserve and enhance protections for future generations.
Advisory boards of religious leaders, lay leaders, and legal experts will provide specialized guidance as subcomponents of the commission.
