Home Law School News Student Spotlight: Ashley Shaw, 2L

Meet Ashley Shaw, 2L and learn more about her story at South Texas Law in this Student Spotlight by the Career Resource Center.

Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?

I chose South Texas Law because the school gave me a fantastic scholarship opportunity.

Where are you working next summer?

I will be working at Haynes and Boone in the finance practice group. I secured that opportunity through on-campus interviews — and I used connections I made through networking to get an interview and, ultimately, secure the internship. The law school’s Career Resource Center was amazing throughout the recruitment process. I leaned on their support throughout my decision-making process, and they were there to cheer me on every step of the way.

What are your career goals for the future?

I hope to excel at whatever I do. I am a first-generation law student so I really had no idea where my legal career would go. I just knew that I wanted to be a lawyer. I am excited to see what I am capable of.

What advice would you share with future law students going through recruitment?

Take your 1L classes very seriously. Your grades are the first half of your success. The second half is how you present yourself in interviews. The more “yourself” you are, the more likely you are to be hired for a position that aligns with your values.

Which professors have influenced you and or your career path the most?

Dean Goodman has been a wonderful resource. I had her for Legal Research and Writing I. She gave her students a really good idea of what the legal world looks like. I still reach out to her for advice today!

What student organizations have you been involved with?

I am a member of the South Texas Law Review, First-Generation Law Student Association, and Jewish Law Students Association.

Beyond the CRC, how has the law school community supported your growth?

Everyone is so incredibly nice and willing to help in whatever capacity they can. I have never been turned away when asking for help.

What is something interesting about you that we can’t learn from your resume?

I have six siblings! I cherish my family.
