A group of South Texas College of Law Houston students and four professors experienced exceptional legal education in the beautiful environment of Prague, Czech Republic, in the 2024 Summer Study Abroad Program, and plans are underway for next summer’s program.
“I don’t think South Texas could have picked a better city for the Summer Study Abroad Program,” said Lauren Loader, third-year law student. “Prague is absolutely breathtaking, and there is so much to do! I loved learning about the Czech culture and history, and I’ve made lifelong friends through this experience.”
South Texas Law Professors Katerina Lewinbuk, Derek Fincham, Christopher S. Kulander, and Matthew Festa taught a number of classes in Prague. The classes took place at the Faculty of Law at Charles University, Prague’s premier law school, which was founded in 1348. Students earned academic credit and gained global perspectives while engaging in activities inside and outside the classroom.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Prague 2024 Study Abroad Program,” said Jesse Givens, third-year law student. “From academic and extracurricular to cultural and historical, the value of the experience far exceeded its cost. If given the opportunity, I would do it again, many times over.”
Third-year student Asha Hayes reflected on her experience as well. “My month in the halls of Charles University’s Faculty of Law made me a better and more global citizen. I will carry this experience with me throughout my legal career.”
According to Prof. Lewinbuk, who directs the law school’s international programs, the 2025 Summer Study Abroad Program is scheduled for May 23-June 20, 2025. In addition to Profs. Lewinbuk and Fincham, next year’s program will feature Profs. Rob Galloway and Haley Palfreyman Jankowski.
Next summer in Prague, students can take Comparative Pre-Trial Advocacy (Prof. Galloway) or International Cultural Heritage Law (Prof. Fincham); and either Global Lawyering Seminar (Prof. Lewinbuk) or Civil Litigation in a Comparative Context (Prof. Jankowski). (Note: Prof. Galloway’s course is an experimental offering subject to the STCL Curriculum Committee’s approval.)
