Britney Parada, a South Texas College of Law Houston student who plans to graduate in May 2026, currently serves as president of the Lawtina Network — a student organization that uplifts Latinas in the legal field.

Parada graduated from Cypress Lakes High School in 2020 and earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in psychology from Sam Houston State University. She is the first person in her family to go to law school.

She was drawn to South Texas Law by the school’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and by the variety of student organizations that she believed would offer the sense of belonging she was looking for in a law school. In addition to her leadership role with the Lawtina Network, she is a  2L Representative for the Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA).

“My involvement in HLSA and Lawtina have deepened my sense of connection at South Texas Law,” Parada said. “These organizations provide a safe, supportive community where I can share my struggles and experiences. Through engaging events and mentorship programs, I have built meaningful relationships that help me feel more connected.”

Parada recognizes the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month because it highlights the rich contributions and diverse cultures of the Hispanic community. “It’s an opportunity to honor the sacrifices and successes of individuals who have come before us, paving the way for future generations,” she said. “Celebrating these achievements encourages inclusivity, educates the wider public about our history, and promotes cultural diversity.”

Parada was drawn to the Lawtina Network because of the variety of ways the group lifts Latinas and helps them connect with one another. She enjoys the inspiring campus events where Latina attorneys and judges share their struggles and offer words of encouragement and the annual Lawtina Summit (recently hosted in San Antonio) that brings together Latinas from across the country for a conference and valuable networking opportunities.

“With only 3% of lawyers being Latinas, it can feel isolating — especially if you don’t see many people who look like you,” Parada said. “My goal is to help create a welcoming environment through Lawtina that promotes self-love and a sense of belonging, encouraging Latinas to recognize that our voices truly matter.”

Parada has found strong support within the South Texas Law community, including mentors who have guided her personally and professionally. Through Lawtina, HLSA and events hosted through the Career Resource Center and Alumni Association, she also has found mentors in the broader legal community.

“South Texas Law does an excellent job of hosting events with guest speakers from diverse backgrounds, which has opened doors for me,” Parada said. “The faculty is very supportive and always eager to help students connect with individuals in the legal profession. Having people to turn to for advice and guidance has made my journey more manageable and fulfilling, and their influence inspires me to pay it forward by supporting others in their journeys as well.”

In summer 2024, Parada was a judicial intern for the Hon. Natalia Cornelio of the 351st Criminal District Court and an intern for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Next summer, she plans to work for a criminal defense firm.

“My law school experience has been both challenging and rewarding,” she said. “I value my strong support system both in and out of law school because it takes a village to navigate this journey. If you are considering law school, take the leap and choose South Texas Law. You can’t go wrong with the hands-on learning opportunities, real-world experience, active student organizations, and vibrant community. The sense of belonging and connection will definitely enrich your law school experience.”
