In Memoriam: Congressman Sylvester Turner

Home Law School News In Memoriam: Congressman Sylvester Turner

We join the community in mourning the loss of U.S. Congressman Sylvester Turner, former state legislator from Houston’s Acres Homes and mayor of Houston, and longtime friend of STCL Houston.

Two months after being elected to fill late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s seat in District 18, Turner died at the age of 70.

Although he was newly elected to the Congress, Turner had a “long and distinguished career in public service and spent decades fighting for the people of Houston,” said House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“Congressman Turner was the consummate public servant. But to us, he was our beloved father, grandfather, sibling and relative. Thank you for your prayers,” the family said in its statement to the press.

The STCL Houston community honors Rep. Turner’s years of dedicated service to the people of Houston, and we extend our prayers and condolences to his family during this difficult time.
