Known for decades as a national powerhouse, the South Texas College of Law Houston advocacy program recently completed an historic season.

“When our advocacy teams began competing this season, we knew our students were talented and well-prepared,” said Prof. Rob Galloway, vice president of advocacy and W. James Kronzer Jr. Distinguished Professor of Advocacy. “What we couldn’t have anticipated was witnessing one of the most dominant seasons in law school advocacy history.”

A Season for the Record Books

The advocacy program’s achievements included:

  • Five National Championships – an unprecedented accomplishment for a single season, bringing the total number of national championships to 146
  • One Scribes National Brief Writing Award – recognizing exceptional legal writing excellence
  • Three Regional Championships – dominating competitions across the country
  • Ten Individual Speaking Awards – highlighting the exceptional advocacy skills of South Texas Law students

These victories spanned multiple prestigious competitions, from the Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition to the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco Constitutional Law Competition, the First Chair Mock Trial Competition, the American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition, and the Seigenthaler-Sutherland Cup First Amendment Moot Court Competition.

Beyond the Trophies

The 2024-25 competition season filled with team victories and individual wins resulted in the advocacy program being ranked third nationally in a recent report issued by the Blakely Advocacy Institute at the University of Houston Law Center. South Texas Law was the highest ranked Texas law school on the list highlighting moot court competition victories.

For decades, South Texas College Law’s advocacy program has consistently produced championship teams, and the record of success rivals the most storied institutions. The advocacy trophy cases overflow with evidence of these accomplishments. But these trophies tell more than a story of hard work and national victories. They embody a deep-rooted tradition and unwavering commitment to advocacy education.

“Our students train hard not just to win competitions and add to the school’s legacy, but to enter the legal field with the skills, experience, and confidence to contribute to and win cases from day one,” Galloway said. “This ‘practice-ready’ approach has been and will remain the cornerstone of a South Texas Law education.”

Gratitude and Recognition

Galloway gives credit for the season’s remarkable achievements to the dedication of the law school’s entire advocacy community:

  • Student Champions: Competitors represented South Texas Law with distinction, skill, and professionalism. Their hard work and talent continue to elevate the institution’s reputation nationwide.
  • Dedicated Coaches: Despite maintaining full-time law practices, these exceptional attorneys devoted countless evenings and weekends to prepare students for success. Their commitment exemplifies the unwavering support of the school’s faculty and alumni network, who continually give back to develop the next generation of attorneys educated at South Texas Law.
  • Internal Advocacy Team: Hayley Stenhouse, Rebecca Hogg, Connor Evans, Sandra Guillen, Stephanie Sullivan, and Haley New, whose tireless dedication and invaluable contributions made this success possible.

Looking Forward

“This unprecedented success reflects individual talent and an entire community’s dedication to recruiting, developing, and supporting exceptional advocates,” Galloway said. “These victories demonstrate that South Texas Law students are mastering advocacy skills in the classroom and are prepared to represent clients effectively from the moment they graduate.”
