Recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month : Thuy-Anna Pham, 3L

I am about to begin my third year at South Texas College of Law Houston, anticipating graduating in May 2023. I am the 2022-23 president for two student organizations — the Women’s Law Society (WLS) and the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA). During my second (2L) year, I was the vice president for WLS and the secretary for APALSA. I am also a competitor in the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Program in the Frank Evans Center for Conflict Resolution, and I have been an active volunteer and translator in the school’s pro bono legal services program.

I am Houston born, Houston raised and Houston made. I attended the University of Houston, earning my undergraduate degree in marketing with a minor in Spanish.

Bright Futures: South Texas Student Secures Army JAG Position

Heaven Smith will soon leave South Texas College of Law Houston with a J.D. degree and a commitment to serve in the U.S. Army. She will proudly join the ranks of South Texas graduates who have served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the U.S. Army — or JAG officers.

The American Bar Association notes that new lawyers are becoming JAG officers more frequently, working in all legal matters involving the military. The work mirrors almost every aspect of civilian law, and JAGs are selected for each of the five U.S. military branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force.

Classroom to Corporate Counsel: Transactional Practice Education Comes in Handy for Recent Alumnus

Kyle Vento ’21, an alumnus of the Transactional Practice program, joined Transocean’s in-house practice group as corporate counsel after graduation.

While working through the challenges of a personal music licensing project, Vento became interested in contracts, intellectual property and entertainment law. Inspired to pursue a legal career, Vento left his job as an audio engineer in New York City and moved back to Houston. He took a clerkship at a small intellectual property law office, assisting with copyright and trademark work, and decided to apply to law school with the goal of becoming a deal lawyer of some sort.
