Meet Trennan Lucking, 1L and learn more about her story at South Texas Law in this Student Spotlight by the Career Resource Center.

Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?

Houston has a renowned legal community, so as someone who grew up in a small town, it was a no-brainer. South Texas College of Law Houston initially impressed me with their reputation and alumni network, but I was truly sold when I visited the school and met the passionate students and staff at the school.

Where are you working this summer?

I will be splitting my summer between Kean Miller for the first half and Markovich Grover for the second half.

How did you secure those opportunities?

I secured my position at Kean Miller with the help of STCL Houston’s Career Resource Center, particularly Noor Ismail, who was instrumental in guiding me through the process. After prioritizing networking and building relationships, I secured my spot at Markovich Grover through a recommendation from a fellow peer.

How did the Career Resource Center (CRC) help you successfully navigate that application process and your career path?

Recognizing that I lacked the legal experience many of my peers had, I started meeting with the Career Resource Center early on to take full advantage of their resources. They provided support throughout the entire process—from refining my resume and cover letters to boosting my confidence for interviews, offering guidance every step of the way.

What are your career goals for the future?

I want to gain as much as experience as possible and be a well-rounded attorney. My mother has been a successful attorney for 30+ years, and I have witnessed first-hand how her legal career has shaped her into the confident woman she is today. I only hope that I one day can make a positive impact like she does.

What piece of advice would you share with future students going through recruitment?

Grades are important, but as someone in the top two percent, I can tell you they aren’t everything. The personal and professional connections you make here will have a far greater impact than your grades ever could.

Which professors have influenced you and/or your career path the most?

My legal research and writing professors, Professor Stewart and Professor Vukadin, have been the most influential as they have instilled in me the fundamentals of legal writing that I will use for the rest of my career. I am truly grateful to have professors who have given me confidence in my writing skills through their teaching and helpful feedback.

What student organizations have you been involved with?

I have been involved in Women’s Law Society and Business Law Society. I have had the opportunity to meet wonderful people in both and attend events in which we uplift one another as students.

Beyond the CRC, how has the South Texas Law community supported your growth?

STCL Houston’s focus on connections has been extremely beneficial to my growth, as they are constantly hosting events in which students can network with alumni and local legal professionals. In addition, the professors have been essential in facilitating my transition into law school by supporting me and always being available to lend a helping hand.

What is something interesting about you we can’t learn from your resume?

I spent the first three years of my life in Montana, and although I don’t hear it myself, people always point out that I have an accent. I’ve learned not to volunteer for any case involving eggs, bags, or legs.
