Student Spotlight: Shanelle Shojaei, 2L

Home Law School News Student Spotlight: Shanelle Shojaei, 2L

Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?

I chose STCL Houston because of its award-winning advocacy program. The sense of community among students and alumni was another factor as well.

Where are you working this summer and what other legal opportunities have you participated in?

I will be working at the Houston office of Troutman Pepper Locke thanks to securing an interview while at a Home for the Holidays event the Career Resource Center encouraged me to attend.

How did the Career Resource Center (CRC) help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?

The CRC helped me navigate the entire process—from editing my resume, to providing networking opportunities, navigating interviews and making the decision to accept an offer.

What are your career goals for the future?

I want to go beyond providing positive results for my clients and continually strive to learn and improve my practice each and every day.

What advice would you give future law students going through recruitment?

A mentor told me to “treat recruitment like it’s your job.” I spent a substantial amount of time attending networking events, connecting with attorneys in the community, and meeting with other students at firms I was interested in, all to be as informed as possible in my candidacy.

I recommend utilizing all of the resources the CRC has to offer, as well as taking the time to connect with fellow students, alumni, and even professors like Shelby Moore, who has been a huge influence on my path as a law student and future attorney. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask people for help, but be genuine about making true connections.

What student organizations have you been involved with?

I am involved with Women’s Law Society, Student Bar Association, Personal Injury Law Society and Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society.

What is something you’ve done that we can’t learn from your resume?

I worked for the Houston Astros for five years and even have the World Series rings to prove it!

How has the law school community supported your growth?

I am a first-generation law student who knew very few attorneys prior to enrolling in law school, so the South Texas College of Law Houston alumni network has been an incredible resource. Their insight has helped me navigate not just recruitment, but law school as a whole.
