Student Spotlight: Ashley Borges, 2L

Home Law School News Student Spotlight: Ashley Borges, 2L

Why did you choose to attend South Texas Law?

I chose to attend South Texas Law because of the supportive campus and my experience in the law school’s Pipeline Program. It was important that my law school experience be defined by a community where everyone is willing to help each other achieve our goals.

What legal opportunities are you participating in?

I began my legal career at Abraham Watkins as a summer law clerk and have continued in the role throughout my 2L year — gaining valuable hands-on experience while balancing the demands of work and academics.

How did you secure your job opportunity?
From networking opportunities through STCL Houston’s Agosto Justice Center for Leadership and Empowerment, to Latino organizations like the Hispanic Bar Association, the Mexican-American Bar Association of Houston, and the Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA), I have been able to make meaningful connections with Houston attorneys.

As a first-generation law student and alumna of the school’s Pipeline Program, attending Bar Association events and galas, and volunteering with these organizations, has allowed me to step into the legal community and be mentored by others who have been where I am. In following up with those relationships, I reached out to the Agosto Justice Center’s founder, Benny Agosto, Jr., and expressed my interest in an opportunity to develop my legal research and writing skills. That conversation led to a summer clerkship at Abraham Watkins, where I continue to work part-time.

How did the Career Resource Center (CRC) help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?
Through one-on-one counseling appointments and resume preparation, the CRC helped me identify my career interests. Based on my experience and goals, my career counselor worked with me to strengthen my resume and encouraged me to set actionable goals. She also shared insight into what attorneys look for when hiring law students, and she made sure I had all the information I needed to explore the opportunities that ultimately led to my current position as a law clerk.

What advice would you give future law students going through recruitment?
My advice is to focus on the path you are creating for yourself. Your path to law school was uniquely your own, and finding the right job should be, too. Now is the time to explore, learn new skills, and utilize South Texas Law’s resources to your benefit. The CRC is invested in your success and will help connect you to the resources you need.

What are your career goals for the future?
My main goal is to grow the skills I am learning in law school and at Abraham Watkins to exceed the expectations of my future clients. I aspire to be a true advocate that represents others with the honesty, integrity, and compassion they deserve. I have seen the trust that clients place in their attorneys and am aware of the sacrifices many make to have their day in court. As an attorney, I plan on working tirelessly to honor that trust.

Who has been influential to you and your career path?

Professor Shelby Moore has taught me what complete commitment to the profession looks like. Her dedication to empowering the next generation of attorneys is admirable and something I will continue to do throughout my career. Meaningful mentorship is important and necessary in order to uplift others entering the legal field.

What student organizations have you been involved with?

I serve as the communications ambassador for HLSA and as a 2L representative for the Caribbean Law Student Association.

How has the law school community supported your growth?

South Texas Law has supported me in every step I take toward my goals. As a member of the Agosto Justice Center’s Pipeline Program, I was able to connect with the CRC and Office of Student Support as an undergraduate student. Now as a 2L, the Agosto Justice Center continues to make sure I am receiving the help and resources I need to succeed. I am forever grateful for their investment in my journey toward becoming an attorney.

What is something unique about you that doesn’t appear on your resume?
