Student Spotlight: Emily Gallagher, 1L

Home Law School News Student Spotlight: Emily Gallagher, 1L

Why did you choose to attend South Texas Law?

I chose STCL Houston because of its reputation for excellence in advocacy and hands-on legal training. I was drawn to the supportive environment and how the school continuously emphasized the importance of preparing students for real-world legal practice.

What legal opportunities are you participating in?

For the next two summers, I will be a summer associate at Norton Rose Fulbright in Dallas. I am especially excited to spend both my 1L and 2L summers at the firm because it gives me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with associates and partners and continue developing those connections over time, which I believe is invaluable.

How did that opportunity open up for you?

Norton Rose Fulbright hosted “Coffee Chats” with attorneys last semester, which gave me the chance to speak with two associates who had previously summered with the firm. Because they were in different practice areas, I enjoyed learning more about their distinct experiences and perspectives. Those conversations solidified my interest in the firm, so I applied the day the application opened.

I also attended the firm’s holiday reception to continue learning and to meet practicing attorneys. Every interaction reinforced that the firm values mentorship and hands-on learning, and I knew that spending my summer there would allow me to be fully immersed in meaningful work. I was thrilled to hear back from them; it was such an easy decision!

How did the Career Resource Center (CRC) help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?

I am grateful for the support of the Career Resource Center, especially my career counselor, Marissa. Early last semester, I shared my rĂ©sumĂ© and cover letter with her, and she took the time to meet with me, answer my questions, and provide thoughtful feedback. Hearing her perspective was extremely helpful. At every step of the recruitment process I was met with encouragement, and I am thankful for that.

What are your career goals for the future?

In my job before law school, I had the opportunity to take the Clifton Strengths Assessment, where my top five strengths were Achiever, Empathy, Responsibility, Strategic, and Discipline. Those strengths reflect the type of attorney I strive to be. I aspire to be a trailblazer and a strong advocate, someone who is trusted by both colleagues and clients, remains agile in all situations, and approaches every matter with discipline to achieve the best possible outcome for both the client and the firm.

What advice would you give future law students going through recruitment?

Be proactive, start early, and network! That said, strong grades are extremely valuable. It is important to remind yourself how hard you have worked to get here and you owe it to yourself to give 110%. Before starting my first year of law school, I promised myself that I would push myself and work diligently. It will be rewarding to reflect on that hard work during interviews.

Who has been influential during your time in law school?

My first semester of law school has been shaped by professors and peers who have been incredibly supportive of my growth. Each professor was accessible and generous with their time during office hours, and the guidance and mentorship I’ve recieved from 2Ls and 3Ls has been invaluable.

Professor Vukadin was my Legal Research and Writing I professor. In her class, I learned how to approach legal writing and research and also gained insight into nuanced aspects of the legal field. She was always accessible during office hours, and she took a real interest in my career goals. She offered valuable advice about law school, summer internships, and the profession as a whole. When I accepted my offer from Norton Rose Fulbright, I was excited to share the news with her because she has been so encouraging throughout the process!

What is something interesting about you that doesn’t appear on your resume?

After I graduated from Texas A&M University, I took a gap year and worked a typical 9-5 job. As a part of my routine, I would go to CorePower Yoga each night after work to take a Pilates class. I was going so much I decided to become certified as an instructor at the studio. I also viewed it as an opportunity to grow in my public speaking. It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone teaching a class of sometimes 60 people, but it was one of the most fun things I have ever done. I loved being creative and making friends with the people in my class.
