Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?
Working a rotating 24-hour schedule as a Houston firefighter and paramedic, I could not realistically attend a traditional full-time program without resigning my position, and even part-time in-person programs would be extremely difficult to manage. However, the advent of fully online JD programs afforded me the opportunity to pursue this education. South Texas College of Law is one of the few institutions in the country that offers an online JD program, which made it possible for me to continue to serve the citizens of Houston while pursuing my Juris Doctor.
What legal opportunities are you participating in?
I had an early start this year, beginning the spring semester with a judicial externship with the Honorable Sonya Aston of the 80th Judicial District of Harris County. It was such a fantastic experience to attend jury trials, work on substantive legal questions, and see the inner workings of the court firsthand during my second semester of law school.
The first half of this summer, I will be a law clerk with the litigation team of Stibbs & Co. I was fortunate to receive the Administrative Public Law Section of the State Bar of Texas’s Summer Internship Scholarship, and I will be a judicial extern for Justice Scott Field of the 15th Court of Appeals in Austin, Texas during the second half of this summer.
How did you secure those opportunities?
I received the externship with the 80th Judicial District after responding to one of the emails the Career Resource Center put out in the fall. I secured the clerkship with Stibbs & Co. through On Campus Interviews.
What are your career goals for the future?
I want to be an advocate for my clients just as I have served people as a firefighter, paramedic and a soldier. I will be pursuing a career in civil litigation, with a particular interest in government and public entity work. My background in public safety has given me tremendous insight into the legal, operational, and human dimensions of that environment, and I intend to bring that perspective into my practice.
