Meet Derek Stowers, 2L, and learn more about his story at South Texas Law in this Student Spotlight by the Career Resource Center.

Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?
I chose South Texas Law because of its location in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country — and because of the advocacy program’s excellent reputation.
Where are you working next summer?
I’m splitting the summer between the Lanza Law Firm, PC, and Horne Rota Moos, LLP. I secured these opportunities through the Career Resource Center’s on-campus interview program.
How did the CRC help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?
The CRC is an invaluable resource at South Texas Law. I contacted Marie Garcia during my first year of law school for guidance on my OCI materials and for navigating upcoming interviews. Marie and I met multiple times in person and maintained communication over email, during which time she helped me edit my resume and provided me with resources for writing effective cover letters and properly contacting employers. I am glad I contacted the CRC and would recommend meeting with a CRC advisor before you go through recruitment.
What are your career goals for the future?
I hope to open my own practice before turning 30 and continue to grow in my knowledge of the legal field throughout my career.
What advice would you share with the future law students going through recruitment?
Trust your ability to sell yourself. Everybody’s story on how they got to law school is different, and you need to be able to identify strong points, regardless of whether they came from the legal field.

Which professors have influenced you and/or your career path the most?
Professor Vanessa Browne-Barbour opened my views on civil litigation, specifically personal injury. As attorneys, we can help those who need a voice to speak up for them.
What student organizations have you been involved with?
I am currently in a speaker role on the moot court team. I also am a member of the Personal Injury Law Society, the Oil and Gas Law Society, and the Sports and Entertainment Law Society.
How has the law school community supported your growth?
South Texas Law is a friendly environment. I am blessed to say I can refer to many of my peers as colleagues and as friends. Everybody is very supportive of one another, and that encourages growth throughout law school and beyond.
What is something interesting about you we can’t learn from your resume?
I spend time outside school focusing on my physical health and eating habits. I have a long career ahead of me, and prioritizing my health while I am still young will allow that belief to come to fruition.
