Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?
I chose South Texas Law because of how welcoming and supportive the community was when I visited.

Where are you working this summer?
I will be working at Memorial Hermann as a summer intern in the Corporate Compliance Department.

How did you secure that opportunity?
I found and applied for this position through LinkedIn. After many rejections, I reached out to my career counselor Marie Garcia in the Career Resource Center, expressing my concerns regarding finding an opportunity for summer. She suggested I begin applying to positions on LinkedIn. I came across the Memorial Hermann internship, and because I have a strong interest in health law, I applied and secured an interview.

How did the Career Resource Center (CRC) help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?
Marie has helped me tremendously throughout the recruitment process — beginning to end. She helped me with my application materials, cold-contacting employers, writing emails, and preparing for interviews, and she advised me on navigating the process. Additionally, she frequently followed up with me to check on my progress, always made herself available when I needed anything, and was willing to hop on a phone call when urgent matters arose.

What are your career goals for the future?
I plan to practice health law, with a focus on compliance and transactional work. I am specifically interested in helping healthcare organizations navigate the complex regulatory landscape to ensure they remain compliant with federal and state laws. I also am drawn to the intersection of law, policy, and patient care, and I want to play a role in helping healthcare institutions operate ethically and efficiently. Long term, I hope to work in-house at a hospital system or healthcare company where I can help develop internal policies, review and draft contracts, and support initiatives that improve healthcare delivery.

What advice would you give future students going through recruitment?
Do not give up! The process can become discouraging and stressful, especially when the end of the semester is approaching and you see that your other classmates are securing positions. Don’t let that discourage you! Keep applying and reaching out to employers. I am a firm believer that what is meant for you will be for you, so use those rejections as a redirection.

For me, even though it was late in the semester, I not only secured a position, but it’s a position in the practice area I am interested in and hope to practice in after graduating. Also, use the Career Resource Center. They are specifically there to help you. They will do everything they can to assist you in securing a position.

Which professors have influenced you and/or your career path the most?
Professor Lisa Dahm has influenced my career path the most. Coming into law school, I knew I wanted to practice health law, but I had no idea what that path would look like and where to start. Because of her extensive experience in the healthcare industry and health law, she has given me so much valuable advice on how to navigate that path and helped me narrow down specifically what I want to do within the health law practice area.

Professors Njeri Rutledge and Shelby Moore have also had had a significant impact on my law school journey, specifically during my first year. Their support and guidance truly made me feel welcomed, and the valuable advice they shared is something I will take with me throughout the rest of law school and into my legal career.

What student organizations have you been involved with?
I am currently the managing editor for Corporate Counsel Review, vice president of the Health Law Society, and treasurer for the Black Law Students Association. I also am on the alternate dispute resolution team.

How has the South Texas Law community supported your growth?
While law school is generally known for its competitive environment, South Texas Law doesn’t feel that way. Every classmate and student I’ve met has been kind and willing to help. The friends I’ve made here have been so supportive and have made my law school experience better than I ever could have imagined. Additionally, Student Support goes out of their way to provide students with resources that support our wellbeing and help us succeed academically and personally.

What is something unique about you we can’t learn from your resume?
Prior to moving to Houston, I had my own dessert business.
