Meet Caitlin Yates, 3L, and learn more about her story at South Texas Law in this Student Spotlight by the Career Resource Center.
Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?
They recruited at my undergraduate university and it was closer to my family!
What are you working after graduation?
Porter Law Firm
How did you secure that opportunity?
I was interested in the transactional clerk position, but the post called for a higher class year than I had at the time. I took the initiative to apply anyway and to demonstrate my readiness for the role, which secured me an interview. During the interview, I showcased my experience in real estate and transactional law, and I earned a clerkship offer. This hiring process helped me feel more confident when applying to positions where I have experience gaps by preparing through interview research, communication with the Career Resource Center (CRC), and refreshers on applicable topics I learned in my first year of school. Remain diligent and apply for the jobs you want, not just the jobs you directly qualify for on paper.
How did the Career Resource Center help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?
The CRC team helped me with mock interviews, updating my resume, and helping me apply and interview through the on-campus interview program. The works!
What are your career goals for the future?
I plan to keep growing in the field and someday pass off opportunities to students like me.
What advice would you share with future law students going through recruitment?
Stay motivated and don’t let an opportunity pass you by because you are discouraged. Take the criticism, learn from it, and keep moving forward.
Which professors have influenced you and or your career path the most?
Professor Ricks’ antitrust class was the most influential and kept me motivated to stay on the transactional track.
What student organizations have you been involved with?
Women’s Law Society
How has the the law school community supported your growth?
The Bar Preview Program and the Office of Student Support have helped me to stay on track despite any hardships that have come my way. Also, friendships! I wouldn’t be anywhere without my girls!
What is something interesting about you we can’t learn from your resume?
I am an avid comic book collector and love going to conventions.
