Competition Teams

Brief Writer

Brief writers are selected annually through an application process and must enroll in Advanced Appellate Practice, a two-semester course focused on appellate theory and practice. Students in the course develop their written advocacy skills by preparing appellate briefs for national moot court competitions. Applications are closed for the current academic year.

Moot Court Oralist

Moot court oralists represent South Texas Law in appellate-style competitions, where students present legal arguments and respond to questions from a panel of judges. Oralists are selected through tryouts twice each academic year. For Fall 2026, applications are due August 18, with tryouts taking place August 20 and 21.

Mock Trial Team Member

Mock trial team members represent South Texas Law in trial-style competitions that feature witness testimony, courtroom procedure, and arguments directed to a jury. Students are selected once each academic year through annual tryouts, and select Advocacy Concentration courses are strongly recommended to support their training. For the 2027 mock trial team, applications are due December 9, with tryouts held December 14 through 16.
