Meet Jack Harrison Haimowitz, 2L, and learn more about his story at South Texas Law in this Student Spotlight by the Career Resource Center.

Q: Name and class year?
A: My name is Jack Harrison Haimowitz, and I am a current 2L who will graduate in 2025.

Q: Why did you choose to attend STCL Houston?
A: STCL Houston’s commitment to its students and posture within the Houston legal market were my two main considerations when deciding on which law school to attend. Within the Houston market, I am well aware that STCL Houston’s reputation is stellar, as is the perception of their graduates. I have found that attorneys in Houston hold STCL Houston graduates in a high regard. Lastly, the South Texas Law alumni network is a strong, tight-knit group of people who really respect each other.

Q: Where are you working next summer?
A: Next summer, I will be working as a summer associate at DLA Piper in the finance practice group in the Los Angeles Office.

Q: How did you secure that employment opportunity?
A: I received this opportunity by applying to the direct application portal on DLA Piper’s website. I had previously worked with DLA Piper in my undergrad years, and maintaining the relationships I forged back then played a huge role in landing this position. The interview process, for me, consisted of four 30-minute interviews.

Q: How did the Career Resource Center help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?
A: The CRC is directly responsible for my understanding of securing a job in the field of law. I knew absolutely nothing prior to walking into the CRC my 1L year. As a first-generation law student, I did not have a personal network to rely on, and the CRC helped to fill that gap for me. My career advisor, Katie Silver, was directly responsible for helping me land my 1L summer associate position with Womble Bond Dickinson. Without the CRC, I would not be in the position I am today.

Q: What are your career goals for the future?
A: I would like to remain at a large law firm. I have an interest in transactional work, and I feel that working at a large firm will not only provide me with numerous options regarding the future of my career, but also the ability to interact with complex work from the outset of my career. This summer, I hope to gain experience in the project finance and asset finance sub-groups at DLA Piper. As a finance major, I would love to work at the intersection of both finance and law, and I feel as though working at a large firm like DLA Piper will facilitate this goal.

Q: What piece of advice would you share with the future generation of STCL Houston students going through recruitment?
A: My biggest piece of advice is to be kind to yourself. This process was incredibly stressful, and that is largely because of the pressure I put on myself. I began seeing a therapist following the stress of 1L OCI and that helped me realize some things about myself that I wish I would’ve known sooner. Be honest with yourself about your goals and ambitions, and then formulate a decision about where you would like to work. Having an idea of what you are looking for will really help to refine this process. A considerable amount of the job hunt is beyond your control, and coming to grips with that as soon as possible will serve you well.

Q: Which professors have influenced you or your career path the most?
A: One of the professors who really inspired me to go to law school is Professor Jeffery Dickerson, my Business Law professor at UT Austin. He is a large part of the reason why I decided to go to law school, and he has been a consistent mentor for me and a guiding influence; he’s been fantastic. All in all, most of my teachers have been supportive of me chasing the best opportunities possible, and they have been great at facilitating opportunities for me to interact with the law in ways that would help me make a calculated decision about my future.

Q: What student organizations have you been involved with?
A: I am only in Texas Exes as of right now. I also network with my peers as I’m at the school often and am never afraid to introduce myself. In January of next year, I will join the Corporate Counsel Review as well.

Q: Beyond CRC, how has the STCL Houston community supported your growth?
A: I would not be the man I am today if it weren’t for the community at STCL Houston. The people here are not only supportive, but genuinely caring. I feel as though the Career Resource Center has taken a personal interest in my success, and it really shows.
