Training for Practitioners

40-Hour Basic Mediation Training for Lawyers

South Texas College of Law Houston offers a basic 40-hour mediation training several times per year. The training is taught by Associate Dean, Catherine Burnett and Director of the Frank Evans Center for Conflict Resolution, Debra Berman. During this 40-hour training, students serve as third-party neutrals, settlement advocates, and parties to the dispute. Emphasis is on the practice of mediation through intensive skills training. Students develop an appreciation both for the functioning of the third-party neutral and for the advocate’s role in the Dispute Resolution process. All students will have the opportunity to play the role of mediator and will be recorded doing so. This intensive training complies with both the Texas statutory requirement for mediation training, (§ 154.052 Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code) as well as the Texas Mediation Trainers Roundtable Standards for Mediation Training. Upon completion, students will receive their mediation certificate.

Please note that this training is open to attorneys only. The cost is $1,025 ($925 for STCL alumni) and includes all materials. The course provides 40 hours of MCLE credit including 3 hours of ethics. Class runs from 9:00am-5:30pm daily.
