NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

South Texas College of Law Houston is committed to helping make higher education affordable to our students.  In this section, you will find a list of NATIONAL scholarships that may be of interest to you.  If you apply for and receive an award, please let the Financial Aid Office know.  In addition, during your time at South Texas College of Law Houston, the Financial Aid Office will make additional scholarship opportunities available to students.

Description:
The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual competition sponsored by the Academy and seeks to stimulate the production of scholarly work in international human rights law

Criteria:
Awardees receive a full scholarship to Attend the Program of Advanced Studies of the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. Participants must hold a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) or equivalent. Participants have the flexibility to choose any subject related to the assigned topic. The essay has to be a legal article.

Description:
The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women Trial Lawyers Caucus in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it. This scholarship is traditionally given to a female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs’ lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.

Description:
George A. Strait Minority Scholarships are awarded annually to college graduates with meaningful law library experience who are members of a minority group as defined by current U.S. government guidelines, are degree candidates in an accredited library or law school, and who intend to have a career in law librarianship. Applicants must show evidence of financial need

Description:
Career Development Grants support women who hold a bachelor’s degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the workforce. Special consideration is given to women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields

Description:
Legal medicine is the professional and academic discipline that concerns itself with legal aspects of medical science, medical practice and other health care delivery. Practitioners of the specialty have sufficient training, knowledge and expertise to address the scope of the specialty from a scholarly, scientific, and practical perspective.

Criteria:
(1) All authors must have previously achieved a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited institution and must be currently enrolled in an accredited law, medical, podiatric, nursing, dental, health science or health care administration program in the United States or Canada. (2) No paper that has been previously published in any form will be considered; however, papers written for scholarly classes will be allowed as long as they have not been published. (3) All papers submitted will receive consideration for publication in the Journal of Legal Medicine or other medical legal publications.

Description:
The funds for this program come from the earnings of the Littleton-Griswold Fund. Only members of the Association are eligible to apply. The grants are intended to further research in progress and may be used for travel to a library or archive, for microfilms, photographs, or photocopying-a list of purposes that is meant to be merely illustrative, not exhaustive (other expenses, such as child care, can be included). Preference will be given to those with specific research needs, such as the completion of a project or completion of a discrete segment thereof

The AIGC administers this loan for the Bureau of Indian Education which will be paid back at the rate of one year of service for one year of funding.

Description:
Papers will be judged on the basis of originality and timeliness of topic, knowledge and use of applicable legal principles, proper and articulate analysis of the issues, use of authorities and extent of research, logic and reasoning in analysis, ingenuity and ability to argue by analogy, clarity and organization, correctness format and citations, grammar and writing style, and strength and logic of conclusions

Criteria:
Open to students enrolled in J.D. or graduate law programs at accredited law schools in the United States and Canada as of the competition deadline. Editors of the American Indian Law Review are not allowed to compete.

Description:
APAGS scholarships are available to graduate student members of APAGS who are enrolled at least halftime as a student in good standing at a regionally accredited university. If you are a student affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and are in a masters or doctoral program, you are automatically a member of APAGS.

The mission of the AAIA, as approved by our board of directors, is to promote the welfare of American Indians and Alaska Natives by supporting efforts to: sustain and perpetuate their cultures and languages; protect their sovereignty, constitutional, legal and human rights, and natural resources; and improve their health, education, and economic and community development

Description:
Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership and philanthropic potential, a strong commitment to the profession, and/or the ability to overcome difficult obstacles. Involvement in programs that highlight advancement or support of women in the legal profession and in the community, and participation in community outreach programs will also be considered. Financial need is a factor.

Criteria:
Any current second or third-year female law student currently enrolled at a law school in Houston, Texas who has earned at least 30 credit hours is eligible to apply.

Although there are Federal and State laws that require cities to build and maintain safe roads and highways, thousands of people are hurt or killed each year on U.S. roads and highways due to poor road quality and conditions. Description:
Binder & Associates is awarding a $1500 scholarship to one qualified student who plans to become an attorney. Pre law undergraduates and students entering law school anywhere in the United States are eligible. The scholarship is meant to help defray the costs of tuition or other related expenses.

Criteria:

Accepted into a U.S. university as a pre law undergraduate or attending law school

Description:
The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit through an application process that is evaluated by a committee. Gruber scholarships are for one year only but recipients can reapply and receive the award up to four times.

Criteria:
Spouses and dependent children of blinded veterans are eligible. The blinded veteran family member is not required to be a BVA member for the spouse or child to receive a scholarship.

Description:
Fellows include women and men in such fields as public service, education, government, health, business, engineering, architecture, science, farming, forestry, law, trade unions, law enforcement, journalism and social work. Fellowships range in length from two months to 18 months, and are required to be completed within 36 months of the mandatory start date.

U.S. citizen or permanent resident; 24 years or older at the application deadline date; have lived and worked for at least one continuous year immediately prior to the application deadline in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, or one of the 23 sovereign nations that shares the same geographic area with these states.

Description:
The American Constitution Society welcomes all papers furthering and promoting a progressive vision of the Constitution, law, and public policy. Entrants are encouraged to view this topic broadly, and we welcome submissions on a variety of substantive areas. Examples of possible topics include: access to the courts, civil liberties, consumer rights, disability rights, freedom of speech, GLBT rights, human rights,
immigration, labor law, money in judicial elections, voting and the political process, privacy, protection of health, safety, the environment, racial equality, religion, second amendment and guns, separation of powers and federalism, and women’s reproductive rights and reproductive freedom. Papers will be judged on their effective use, analysis, and/or expansion of progressive legal scholarship. The judging committee will include federal judges and leading academics. The student authors of the top three papers will receive special recognition at the 2017 ACS National Convention and a cash prize for their work. The top paper will receive an offer of publication in the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law.

The Section on Taxation has recently named the annual competition the Donald C. Alexander Tax Law Writing Competition in honor of former IRS Commissioner (1973-1977) Don Alexander, who passed away in 2009. Description:
The Honorable T. John Ward American Inn of Court is proud to offer the Franklin Jones, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for law students from the Eastern District of Texas. This scholarship is part of the Honorable T. John Ward American Inn of Court’s commitment to assisting aspiring law students from circumstances of need become lawyers of high ethics, civility, and professionalism.

Description:
Scholarships are awarded on an academic year basis. A student is eligible to receive only one United Methodist scholarship during any one academic year from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) funds. GBHEM scholarships assist students from various backgrounds working toward various higher education degrees. Applicants may be enrolled at any accredited institution within the United States to be eligible. GBHEM Administers over 50 scholarship programs with varied criteria and deadlines. The Scholarship Office reviews each application to determine the best program for the student.

Description:
The World Communion Scholarship Program supports students from Global Ministries mission partner institutions in their advanced studies (Master’s or Doctoral) preparing them for leadership involvement in church and society. The program seeks to support students for leadership development as it directly relates to mission. Priority areas of mission include: elimination of poverty, expansion of global health, leadership and congregational development. The program supports students from outside the U.S. (World Communion International Scholarship) or from racial/ethnic minorities from within the U.S. (World Communion National Scholarship).

In its 19th year, ELI promotes discussion and debate on the most compelling legal issues facing the music industry today. The initiative also promotes future careers in entertainment law by seeking out the nation’s top law students and giving them invaluable networking and educational opportunities. This writing contest challenges students to identify, research, and write an essay with a proposed solution on a compelling legal issue confronting the music industry. A national panel of music law experts will judge the papers in a blind process, and select 5 finalists

Description:

The U.S. Constitution has long been interpreted by judges and understood by most Americans to support comprehensive environmental protection. However, arguments questioning the constitutional legitimacy or application of environmental law continue to be made. ELI invites law students to submit papers exploring current issues of constitutional environmental law. This annual writing competition is made possible through the generous support of Beveridge & Diamond PC, one of the nation’s premier environmental law firms.

THE HENRY L. DIAMOND CONSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PRIZE: The author of the article deemed best by a panel of judges will receive $2000 cash, an offer of publication in the Environmental Law Reporter, and a one-year individual membership to ELI.

TOPIC: Any topic addressing developments or trends in U.S. environmental law with a significant constitutional, “federalism,” or other cross-cutting component

Students currently enrolled in law school (in the U.S. or abroad) are eligible, including students who will graduate in 2017. THE 2018 VISUAL ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST Randolph Rice Injury Attorneys asks each scholarship applicant to combine a written essay with a visual campaign to address one of the following public safety issues:
Concerns that an individual may have after being involved in an accident
Consequences of drinking and driving
Safety tips to decrease distracted driving
Applicants must submit an essay of 750-1,000 words on one of the specified topics. Each paragraph of the essay will correspond to an original photograph that supports the subject. Please note that all photographs submitted must be taken by the applicant with a range of 4-6 photographs preferred.

Description:
ISF’s goal is to encourage Muslim students to pursue a college or post-graduate degrees in humanities, social sciences, liberal arts and law through awarding annual scholarships of $1000-$10,000 to deserving students

Former MLBPA Executive Director, Michael Weiner, lost a courageous and inspiring battle against an inoperable brain tumor in November 2013. Just 51 at the time of his death, Michael spent most of his adult life caring for others. In 2014, Major League baseball players honored Michael’s legacy by establishing the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies.
