Frank Evans Center for Conflict Resolution, Harry L. Reed Oil and Gas Institute Host 5th Annual Energy Law Negotiation Competition
South Texas College of Law Houston’s Frank Evans Center for Conflict Resolution and Harry L. Reed Oil and Gas Institute recently hosted the school’s 5thannual Energy Law Negotiation Competition.
Thirty-six students from 18 national law schools participated in the competitive alternative dispute resolution tournament that provides students with a unique opportunity to sharpen their negotiation skills in the energy law field.
Forty-one judges — all oil and gas attorneys from the Houston area — listened to the students’ transactional negotiations and critiqued their advocacy. STCL Houston Adjunct Professor Chuck Brownman drafted the first-round fact pattern, which was a negotiation of a surface-use agreement.
A reception sponsored by Haynes & Boone and Gray, Reed, & McGraw provided an invaluable opportunity for students — particularly those interested in entering the oil and gas field — to network with their judges.
Teams from the University of Houston and Texas Tech University took home first and second places, respectively.
Participating law students represented the following schools: the University of Texas, Southern Methodist University, the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Texas Tech University, Louisiana State University, Tulane University, Loyola University New Orleans, the University of Connecticut, the University of Georgia, Stetson University, Cardozo University, Brooklyn Law School, the College of William & Mary, West Virginia University, University of Wyoming, Chapman University, and STCL Houston.
