Network Printing

By Susan Spillman, Computer Instructional Services Librarian

At the beginning of each semester, all current student computer accounts are given access to 400 pages of free printing to the network printers. You must have an active South Texas computer account and you must be logged in to the school network in our library to print to the network printers in Room #3010.

Network printing includes ALL printing from the labs except Westlaw and Lexis printing directed to the Westlaw and Lexis stand alone printers in Room #3046. Lexis and Westlaw provide free printing to their standalone printers if you use the Print command from within their software or web site. Don't use the browser Print command or it will go to our network printers and your account will be charged.

If you connect to our network with your laptop, you can print to the network printers, if you are logged in with your username. Laptop Network Printing Instructions are available at the Help Desk in Room #3011. If you use all of your free prints, you will have to use a copy card or put money on your ID using the Venda-card machine in Room #3048 or the 2nd floor copy room. All unused prints expire at the end of the semester -- no carryover or transfer is permitted.

Follow these steps to print to the network printers:

* Restart the lab computer you are using after you log in or before you try to print. (This will clear out the memory and help insure that the computer is connected to the Print Server.)
* Use the Print command in your software.
* Proceed to the Print Release Computers (in the hallway across from the Printer Room).
* Type in your username. Do not enter your password.
* Select your print job. Note at the bottom of the screen -- you see your print balance and which printer your print job is directed to (A,B,C,D).
* Pick up your prints from the correct network printer.
* Prints that are not released will not be charged against your account and will expire at midnight.
* If you use all of your free prints, use a copy card. Please note that the Print system will not release partial pages of a print job if there is not enough in your account or on your copy card to cover the entire number of pages of the print job.
