TAJF has awarded South Texas a $100,574 Basic Civil Legal Services (BCLS) grant and a $2,500 Interest on Lawyer Trust Accounts (IOLTA) to provide civil legal services to low-income people in family law matters, probate matters, guardianship of the incapacitated adult proceedings, estate planning, Social Security matters and child welfare matters in Harris County. Both grants are for services provided between Sept. 1, 2013 and Aug. 31, 2014. The grants will be used by the Randall O. Sorrels Legal Clinics at South Texas College of Law/Houston. The legal clinics have more than 10 direct-service clinics that offer valuable services to the community while also providing important education and training opportunities to students. “South Texas is very proud to receive these TAJF grants, which are vital to our mission of providing high-quality services and programs to help meet the legal needs of the community,” said Catherine Burnett, Associate Dean and Director of Clinical programs at South Texas. As the leading funding source for legal aid in Texas, TAJF provides legal aid organizations with financial assistance to help more than 100,000 low-income Texas families each year on civil matters. Created in 1984 by the Supreme Court of Texas, TAJF’s support for civil legal aid helps low-income Texans, including victims of crime, abused and neglected children, veterans, the elderly and the homeless.
