South Texas College of Law Professor
Named Fulbright Specialist
March 19, 2013—South Texas College of Law Professor Kenneth Williams will teach in Brazil this summer as a Fulbright specialist. Williams was selected to teach “U.S. Criminal Justice and Legal System” at the Federal University of Bahia in the city of Salvador. The Fulbright organization selects an elite group of educators each year to teach in foreign countries as part of an effort to promote mutual understanding and respect between the U.S. and other countries. The course will be taught for four weeks beginning in mid-May, which is in the winter semester for the students.
“This is a great honor,” says Williams. “It is going to be a unique enriching and interesting experience teaching in a growing vibrant country where I get to share our legal system with them while learning about the Brazilian legal system.” Williams joined the South Texas faculty in 2010 where he teaches evidence, criminal law and procedure, international criminal law and human rights, and a death penalty seminar. He is a nationally respected expert on the death penalty and criminal law who has represented several Texas death row inmates and taught in California, Washington, and Texas. He is widely published on topics related to capital punishment and international criminal law, and his book, Most Deserving of Death? An Analysis of the Supreme Court’s Death Penalty Jurisprudence, was released in 2011. Williams earned his undergraduate degree at the University of San Francisco and his J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law.
“Professor Williams has earned the fifth Fulbright designation by a South Texas faculty member,” says President and Dean Donald Guter. “We are very proud of Ken as he joins Professors Mark Steiner and Katerina Lewinbuk by demonstrating strong teaching skills, excellent research and writing talents, and a willingness to be an ambassador abroad for South Texas. We are honored by the recognition of our faculty members.”
