South Texas College of Law Awarded Generous Grant
December 5, 2012—The Fred and Mabel R. Parks Foundation bestowed a $2-million grant on South Texas College of Law, kicking off plans for major building upgrades. South Texas, located in downtown Houston, will use the grant to update the building’s front entrance, increasing the college’s visibility, and to renovate the building’s 15-thousand-square-foot, 9th floor. The college regained use of the top three floors of the building this past year when the 1st and 14th Courts of Appeal moved into the restored, historic courthouse at 301 Fannin Street after two decades at the college. “The remodeled 10th floor opened to our new clinics in August. This grant allows us to launch this project in the spring as the next phase of the master plan,” says South Texas President and Dean Donald J. Guter. “South Texas is very grateful for the ongoing support of the Parks Foundation.”
The Fred and Mabel R. Parks Foundation was established by Houston attorney and 1937 South Texas graduate Fred Parks. The mission of the foundation is to benefit Mr. Parks’ priorities during his life: his law school and medical research. The massive, five-story law library at South Texas is named for Mr. Parks in appreciation for his multi-million dollar gift funding construction. The Parks Foundation has also supported the acquisition of historic materials for the library, scholarships, and professorships.
