STCL’s Richard Carlson Receives Award Named in His Honor by State Bar Committee


Richard R. CarlsonHOUSTON – Richard Carlson, a professor of labor and employment law at South Texas College of Law, received an inaugural award Thursday named in his honor by a State Bar of Texas committee.

The Richard R. Carlson Award for Outstanding Service
was awarded to Carlson by the State Bar of Texas’ Labor & Employment Law Council. It was named in his honor for his commitment, dedication and service to the Council as well as for his work in the practice of labor and employment law. The award was announced Thursday at a meeting in Dallas.

The Carlson award will be given annually by the council to recognize a lawyer’s contributions to the practice of labor and employment law in Texas.

Carlson teaches and writes in the fields of employment law, including discrimination and collective bargaining, family law and contracts. He is the author of a casebook, Employment Law, which is now in its second edition. Carlson also is the author and editor of two annual updated and annotated statutory compilations, Carlson’s Federal Employment Laws Annotated (West Group) and Carlson’s Texas Employment Laws Annotated (West Group).

Carlson is a regular speaker at continuing legal education (CLE) programs in the area of employment law and has presented at more than 50 CLE conferences since 1985.

He received his bachelor of arts degree from Wake Forest and his doctorate of jurisprudence degree from the University of Georgia. He has taught at STCL since 1985.
