Garland Walker Application Deadline
August 28, 2017 @ 5:00 pm
The Garland Walker Inn of the American Inns of Court is now accepting student applications for academic year 2017-2018 memberships. The Garland Walker Inn normally meets on the first Tuesday evening of every month from September until May for a dinner and program. Members are required to commit to attend the monthly meetings and to actively participate in them. In addition, an applicant must have completed thirty (30) hours of course work at STCL at the time of application.
Membership in our Inn chapter is by invitation only. Active members of our local group include federal and state district court and appellate judges, accomplished lawyers and bar officers, district attorneys, law school professors and deans, students, and some new members of the bar. The Inn seeks to sensitize its members to issues of professionalism, courtesy, and ethics, to instill such values in the newest members of the Houston bar and to renew the spirit of professionalism and collegiality among our more experienced members.
Membership is divided into three categories: 1) pupils/associates, 2) barristers, and 3) masters. Pupils/associates are law students and new law school graduates, typically with less than three years’ experience. They are members for one year and are afforded special opportunities to learn from the more experienced lawyers. Membership fees are $100 annually for students. This covers monthly dinners/programs. There is a Spring Banquet as well and we have been able to host as our speaker a number of interesting individuals. The list includes two (2) U.S. Supreme Court Justices, the Judge Advocate General for the U.S. Air Force, a former presidential press secretary, and a former U.S. Secretary of State.
An application form is attached to this email and may also be obtained from the Student Organizations Office, Suite 101C. Each application should have attached to it a current resume. The deadline for returning your application is Monday, August 28, 2017 @ 5:00 PM. Applications may be submitted in Room 101C or by email to email@example.com. For any additional information and material on The Inns of Court, contact Associate Dean Bruce McGovern, Office 707, ext. 1858 or Assistant Dean Morrow, Room 101C, ext. 1825 or visit the national website www.innsofcourt.org.
