The Rules of Professional Responsibility require all lawyers to be zealous advocates for their clients. And while most attorneys are zealous advocates for their clients, they are also obligated not to lie. In short, an attorney’s responsibility to persuasively present his/her client’s case while maintaining the client’s confidences is qualified by the attorney’s equally important duty of candor.

This interactive session of Just Ethics will explore in some detail the limits on zealous advocacy that are imposed on lawyers under the Rules of Professional Responsibility. Some of the topics Mr. Bond intends to address include: how lawyers should respond and what actions they must take if they are asked by their client or another individual to place into evidence testimony or other material the lawyer knows or suspects is false; practical tips lawyers can use in preparing witnesses and when making objections to withhold harmful documents; and the lawyer’s duty of candor in settlement negotiations.
