Instructions: For the first part of the class -- please read pp. 6-22 of the
Friedenthal, Miller (11th ed.) about the basics of civil litigation
You should also print out and bring to class the syllabus,
the diagram of a civil action and the document entitled "How to
Prepare for Class". We will be reviewing and discussing these
materials during that time. I have also posted the power
point slides for the first class. You may want to review these as
you read the class assignment.
For the second hour of the class -- please read pp.75-86. We will
be covering the first case, Pennoyer v. Neff. As you prepare for
the case be sure you can answer the following questions:
1) How many cases are there involved in this case?
2) What is the holding of the case? what is the rationale for the
holding?
3) What Constitutional issues are raised in the case? What role do
they play?
