Computer Guidelines

South Texas College of Law does not have a laptop requirement and does not recommend any specific manufacturer or model. 

Suggested Hardware:

Below are the minimum and recommended hardware configurations for a desktop or notebook computer:

We suggest a computer with a minimum 1.8GHz processor made by Intel or AMD, 512mb memory, 80Gb hard drive, DVD Drive, modem (if using a dial-up internet connection), and network interface.

We recommend a computer with a Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 processor running at a speed of 1.8 GHz or better, 1 GB of memory, 80+ GB SATA hard drive, DVD+/-RW (DVD Burner); a 128-256 Mb video card compatible with Windows Vista; and, for desktops: a 10/100 Ethernet connection; for notebooks: an 802.11g wireless Ethernet connection.

Suggested Software:

Operating System:
Windows XP Home/Professional or Windows Vista.

Antivirus Software:
Symantec (Norton) or McAfee antivirus software.

Web Browser:
Internet Explorer, Firefox or Mozilla.

Email Client:
Email access is web-based through your web browser.

Word Processing Software:
Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007.

*Other operating systems (Mac, Linux/Unix) may be suitable but the College Technology staff has little expertise with these operating systems.

*Windows XP Home edition lacks the capability to connect to a corporate domain.  If you want to connect your laptop directly into the school's network, you will need the XP Pro edition to be able to access your mapped server drives, and for students to print to the lab printers.
