  2. Is The Fred Parks Law Library open to the general public?
    South Texas College of Law is a private school. Accordingly, our primary purpose is to serve matriculating students and faculty. Because the library is a partial U.S. government documents depository, we allow the general public restricted access to library materials and facilities. For example, practicing attorneys and their staff members regularly use the library's research materials. Nonetheless, the College reserves the right to limit access by public patrons.   5. What are the hours when a professional librarian is available at the Reference Desk?

  6. May the professional reference librarians provide legal advice?
    The Fred Parks Law Library has ten professional reference librarians, in addition to support staff. The reference librarians may provide guidance in using legal research materials, but dispensing legal advice is beyond the parameters of their duties. Legal directories are, however, available for persons wishing to select an attorney.

  7. What is contained in the Special Collections Department and what are the usage policies?
    Visit the "Special Collections Department" webpage. This page explains departmental holdings, usage policies, and online forms, as well as provides contact information for the Special Collections Librarian.

  8. Who can check out library materials, and how do I obtain items placed on reserve by a professor?
    The "Patron Services Department" webpage has two subsections entitled "Circulation of Library Materials" and "Reserve."

  9. How may I obtain an interlibrary loan?
    Visit the "Patron Services Department" webpage and scroll to the section entitled "Interlibrary Loan."

  10. How do I search the library's online catalog and how do I locate call numbers?
    STELLA, is the library's online catalog. The library has several guides to legal research, including "Searching STELLA" and "Call Numbers & Locations." Library maps include call number ranges for each floor.

  11. Does The Fred Parks Law Library provide photocopiers or fax machines?
    The library does provide photocopiers and fax machines. For details of availability and usage, please scroll to the two subsections entitled "Photocopiers" and "Faxes" on the "Patron Services Department" webpage.

  12. Does The Fred Parks Law Library have individual or group study rooms?
    The library has study rooms for individuals, small groups, and large groups. The "Patron Services Department" webpage has a subsection entitled "Study Rooms," which explains reservation policies.

  13. What are policies of The Fred Parks Law Library regarding food, drink, and tobacco products?
    The "Food, Drink, and Tobacco Policy" is listed on the "Patron Services Department" webpage.

  14. May patrons use cell phones and pagers inside The Fred Parks Law Library?
    We realize that patrons may need to communicate with colleagues while visiting the library. We respectfully request that patrons speak in low tones and move to a study room or stairwell for extended conversations. The library provides an "ultra-quiet zone" on the first floor, where talking and cell phone use are prohibited.

Our library is named for the late Fred Parks, Class of 1937, who made the largest individual donation to the library fund.
